India Reaffirms Commitment to Russian Oil Imports Despite Trump Tariff Concerns

New Delhi:

India has made it clear that it will continue purchasing oil from Russia despite recent global debates and former U.S. President Donald Trump's statements on imposing tariffs. The Indian government reiterated its stance that oil imports are guided purely by national interest, market stability, and affordable energy security.

According to officials, India’s decision to keep buying Russian crude remains rooted in ensuring steady supply at competitive prices, a policy it has maintained since the Russia-Ukraine conflict began in 2022. At that time, India ramped up imports from Russia as Western sanctions created a price cap on Russian crude, making it economically favorable.

Over the past two years, this move has drawn mixed international reactions. While Western countries have raised concerns about India’s growing dependence on Russian oil, Indian officials emphasize that purchases are entirely legal under international frameworks and not in violation of any sanctions.

From India’s perspective, diversification of energy imports is critical. Officials highlight that Russian crude provides a cost advantage that directly benefits Indian consumers by keeping domestic fuel prices more stable. The government’s message remains consistent: India will act in accordance with its national energy needs, irrespective of foreign political pressures.

In conclusion, despite external tariff threats or political rhetoric, India’s stand is firm—Russian oil imports will continue as long as they align with the country’s economic interests.
