'Udaipur Files' Cleared for Release; Delhi HC Rejects Stay Plea
New Delhi, August 8, 2025 —
The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to halt the release of the film Udaipur
Files, which chronicles the 2022 murder of Udaipur tailor Kanhaiya Lal,
dismissing a plea filed by an accused in the case. The court's decision paves
the way for the film’s scheduled theatrical release on August 8, 2025.
Legal Battle & Court’s
Ruling
The plea was lodged by Mohd.
Javed, one of the accused in the murder case, who argued that the film’s
release would prejudice his right to a fair trial. However, the bench led by
Chief Justice Devendra Kumar Upadhyaya and Justice Tushar Rao Gedela
ruled there was no prima facie case justifying an interim stay.
The court noted that the film had
already received certification, involved significant financial stakes for the
producers, and that there was no direct reference to Javed in the
screenplay—factors tipping the balance in favor of release.
Certification &
Government’s Role
The Ministry of Information and
Broadcasting (MIB) had earlier affirmed the film's certification and
dismissed revision petitions under the Cinematograph Act. This government
clearance further supported the film’s path to release.
Notably, the government also
withdrew its earlier directive to implement six additional cuts in the
film—expediting the final approval for release.
Film Premiers Amid Public
Praise
With legal hurdles cleared, Udaipur
Files premiered on over 4,500 screens across India on August 8, 2025.
Early responses on social media, especially X (formerly Twitter), describe the
film as "truthful and powerful," igniting discussions for its bold
portrayal of real events.
