Sometimes, life pushes us to a point where we have only two choices — break down or rebuild ourselves from scratch. Himi Sharma’s story is a powerful example of choosing the second path.

This story begins in 2005, when Himi met the man who would later become her husband while pursuing her MBA. They fell in love, despite strong opposition from their families due to caste differences. After two years of struggle, they finally got married. The first three years of marriage were happy — full of love, trust, and dreams of a secure future.

Then came November 2010, the month that changed everything.

Himi was suddenly abandoned. Not because of another woman — but because of a ₹3 crore property. Her mother-in-law forced her husband to choose: his wife and two-year-old son, or the ancestral property. He chose the property. Himi was left alone with a toddler and a broken life.

At that time, she earned just ₹5,000 per month as a teacher. With no support system, she moved into a paying guest accommodation where the rent itself exceeded her salary. Survival became a daily battle. Loans piled up. Dreams shrank. Life turned into nothing more than making it through the next day.

A small relief came when she secured a ₹30,000 job at a boarding school. Hoping to save money, she moved back to her parents’ home — but even there, peace was missing. Her father asked her to pay ₹10,000 as monthly rent. Despite being his daughter, she was treated as a financial burden.

The most heartbreaking moment came when her son’s school called her in.
“Fees haven’t been paid. He can’t attend class.”
That day, Himi pawned her jewellery. Her heart shattered when her son innocently asked,
“Mumma, will I still be able to go to school?”

Along with financial hardship came social rejection. She was excluded from weddings and family functions. She worked until 6 pm, tutored extra hours in the evenings, traveled in unsafe autos at night, and during driver strikes, walked nearly 20 kilometres just to get home.

Still, she didn’t give up.

Nearly 10 years later, Himi made a life-changing decision — to stop surviving and start rebuilding. With less than ₹2 lakh in savings, she applied for a Canadian visa. Everyone told her she would fail. But she trusted herself.

In 2019, she moved to Canada with her son. A new country, a new life, and no support system — yet within one month, she secured a job as a college professor. Slowly but steadily, she rebuilt her career, dignity, and confidence.

Today, the woman who was once abandoned for a ₹3 crore property is the proud owner of a house worth ₹3 crore — built entirely through her own hard work. Her son is now growing up in an environment free from judgment and stigma.

Himi reflects:

“People told me my son would grow up and take care of me. But I didn’t wait for him to save me. I saved both of us.”
